About Course

The programme’s primary objective is to cultivate awareness, skills, and the ability to respond effectively to risks associated with travelling to hostile and hazardous environments. These environments may expose individuals to a range of potential threats, including terrorism, conflict, crime, civil unrest, health hazards, and road safety concerns.

The course is distinguished by its highly interactive and learner-centred approach, blending online theoretical components with practical, hands-on application through realistic in-person scenarios. A unique feature of this course is the ‘field day’ scenario-based exercises, which simulate situations that participants may encounter while fulfilling their duties and missions in security-challenging environments. This dynamic combination empowers learners to develop practical skills and knowledge that are crucial for navigating challenging and potentially dangerous situations and responding in the most appropriate manner for their own safety and that of others.

Assessment

Attendance:
A full mark implies uninterrupted attendance through the full course of studies.

Weight: 10 points

Formative Assessment:
Learners will be expected to participate throughout the duration of the course in a wide range of interactive activities, and discussions and partake in Q&A sessions. They will be assessed based on the below criteria during both the online and in-person sessions of the programme.

Weight: 30 points

Final examination:

  • Online Test:

The programme features three online tests scheduled on Days 1, 2, and 3, aligning with the (above) agenda. Each assessment lasts 30 minutes, with a total duration of 90 minutes. These tests have been thoughtfully designed to gauge learners’ comprehension of the course content, encompassing various aspects such as theoretical knowledge, practical application, and situational awareness. The questions encompass a variety of formats, including Multiple Choice Questions, True/False, Short Answer Questions, Scenario-Based Questions, and more.

A sample question is provided below.

Sample question (True or False):
Is risk management the same as risk avoidance?
☐ Yes
☐ No

Weight: 30% (10% allocated to each test)

  • Practical Assignments

Within this practical assignment section, participants will collaborate in groups to deliver presentations on two pivotal themes: “Mission Planning” and “Culture and Diversity ” each accounting for 15% of their overall assessment.

Time allocated for each presentation: 45 minutes/overall duration: 90 minutes.

Sample questions to answer for the “Mission Planning” presentation may include:

  • What are the essential factors that first-time travellers to hostile environments should be mindful of to optimise their mission’s effectiveness and ensure their personal safety and security?
  • What are the potential elements that might impede the success of their mission or pose risks to their safety and security?

Important remarks:

  • The time allocated for preparing these presentations will be incorporated into the self-study hours, ensuring that participants have ample opportunity to research, plan, and develop their presentations effectively.
  • In the agenda, the presentations (practical assignments) are referred to as Assessment 4: Culture and Diversity and Assessment 5: Mission Planning.

Weight: 30 points (15 points per assignment)

Total Weight: 60 points
